Amtrak

Amtrak is the national intercity passenger train system. It is a quasi-governmental agency, with all of its preferred stock owned by the federal government. Amtrak employs over 19,000 people.

Amtrak has a nationwide network of 22,000 miles of routes, and serves 500 communities in 46 states. Amtrak operates over all seven Class I railroads, as well as several short lines. It serves 25 million passengers. Amtrak also provides small package shipping services between over 100 cities.

BNSF Railway (formerly Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway)

The BNSF Railway is among the top transporters of intermodal traffic in North America, and moves more grain than any other American railroad. It also hauls enough coal to generate roughly 10% of the electricity produced in the United States.

The BNSF Railway directly owns and operates track in 27 states, and it is divided into 14 operating divisions. BNSF operates various facilities all over the United States to support its transportation system. In 2000, the BNSF Railway established a grade-crossing closure program, wherein BNSF works with communities and landowners to identify crossings that are unnecessary or redundant.

CSX Transportation

CSX Transportation operates the largest railroad in the eastern United States with a 22,000-mile rail network linking commercial markets in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. CSX Transportation headquarters are in Jacksonville, Fla. It operates two regions, and they are split by the Northern Region which is based out of Calumet City, IL, and the Southern Region based out of Jacksonville, FL. Within these regions CSX Transportation has 10 divisions, with each region having 5 divisions.

Norfolk Southern Railway

Norfolk Southern Railway operates 21,500 route miles in 22 eastern states, the District of Columbia and the province of Ontario, Canada. The most common commodity hauled on the railroad is coal from mines in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
